Computer Lab -- Second Grade

Fall Curriculum to Focus on Art, Safety, Word Processing

We will start the year by assessing students' typing skills. Students will be typing every week in computer lab, however, it is very important that students practice at home via the online typing tutor two to three times a week.

Second-graders will first review the basic word-processing tools they learned last year, including how to save, and close and open a file, and the shift, spacebar, return, undo, redo and delete keys. The first few projects will be word-processing projects, as the students learn advanced tools, such as resizing a page, editing margins, adding and formatting a text box, and adding and formatting clip art. With these tools, hey will make an acrostic, a bookmark, a friendly letter and a newspaper article. (Please remember, projects are subject to change.)

The students will also get a chance to be creative and explore TUX Paint, the fun art software they used last year.  Another project this year will be Pumpkin Art.

Besides, word processing and art projects in the computer lab, we will be discussing five important cyber safety rules.  We take cyber safety very seriously, and we want to make sure our students are safe online.  We will learn about the different parts of the browser and how to navigate the web safely.  By the end of this semester, students will be proficient in launching a word processor and completing a written assignment.  They will also know how to launch an art application or a browser.  They will be able to select a bookmark on the browser and navigate to a website upon direction.  In the second semester, we will learn Power Point and stop animation.

Please contact our Computer Lab instructor, Mr. Richmond, at srichmond@computerwisekids.com if you have any questions about the program.
