Green Team

Balboa Magnet's Green Team Focuses on Environment

The Balboa Magnet Green Team is a group of dedicated students, parents, teachers and staff who are committed to helping the environment and our school.  We are proud of our green fundraising efforts, and we encourage all of our Balboa families to participate in our ongoing recycling initiatives. Help the Earth and enrich our school.

Thank you for your continued support of the Green Team! Dedicated volunteers keep this learning environment going.

Every penny that was earned from recycling this year was used to purchase plants for our gardens. Because of your recycling efforts, Balboa Magnet has been able to obtain official Monarch Waystation status as well as become a certified National Wildlife Habitat!
How can I help?
There are many different recycling opportunities, and we appreciate your participation on any level! If you would like to volunteer or have any questions, please contact Green Team Chair Kelly Mitchell at kelly@neatline.net.

1. Participate in Stop, Drop, and Recycle

Exciting news!! The Green Team recycling program is re-starting this October. This is a great opportunity to educate children on how to reduce waste and keep the planet clean.

We will be collecting plastic beverage bottles and aluminum cans on the first Friday of every month from 7:45am-8:15am (if there is no school on the first Friday, we will collect it on the second Friday). The drop off location will be right by the morning drop off line. Please separate plastic bottles and cans in small bags and drop them off with your children. Volunteers will be waiting to collect the bags.

The first collection day will be Friday, October 6th.

The funds from the recycling program will be used to purchase more plants and butterflies to be used in educational activities for all students throughout the year and the aluminum cans will be donated to the 4th grade efforts to raise funds for Pioneer Day.

Please feel free to contact Kaori Dadgostar at kshimaza21@yahoo.com for more information or to help with the morning collections.

2. Come to First Fridays in the Garden
We invite you to stop by the Balboa Discovery Garden (located behind the school library) on the first Friday of every month from 8:30 –10:30 am.  We will tackle the weeds and help keep our garden looking beautiful.  No experience is necessary, and we provide tools and gloves
.
3. Shop at Greenraising.com to Earn Cash for Balboa Magnet
Greenraising offers a terrific variety of eco-friendly products such as re-useable water bottles, recycled gift-wrap, fair trade coffee, lunch bags and more!   To shop, simply visit www.greenraising.com and chose Balboa Magnet (#2057) as your affiliate.  Twenty-five percent of your purchase will be donated to our school!  Greenraising is a simple, eco-friendly way to help our school throughout the entire year!

4. Use the On-Campus Recycling Centers

There are several specially marked Green Team recycling centers located throughout the campus. Ink cartridges and old cell phones can also be brought to the main office for recycling.  Plastic bottles are collected in the bins at the lunch pavilion and near the front entrance of the school.  These bottles are brought to local recycling centers and are recycled to earn money for our school.  Part of our profits are used to make annual donations to Heifer International.

Another way we recycle is through Terracycle. You can check out their website for more information about the company. We participate in the following Terracycle programs:

Drink Pouch Brigade
We collect empty drink pouches, such as Capri Sun and Honest Kids, on campus and at our Stop, Drop, and Recycle days.  Every year, billions of drink pouches end up in landfills.  TerraCycle is collecting and upcycling these pouches into products such as tote bags, pencil cases, plastic lumber and more.  Our school earns $.01 per pouch, and we are helping to keep our school -- and our world -- a little greener!

Elmer’s Glue Crew Brigade
The “Elmer’s Glue Crew Brigade” collects empty glue sticks and glue bottles (any brand) and upcycles them into plastic decking, outdoor furniture, and much more!  Our school earns $.02 per stick or bottle.  We encourage families to collect their sticks and bottles at home and bring them to school for recycling.

Lunch Kit Brigade
The “Lunch Kit Brigade” helps provide a second life for used Lunchables containers.  Clean, empty kits are collected at recess and lunch at the lower lunch pavilion.  They are sent to TerraCycle where they are upcycled into picnic tables, tote bags and more!  Our school earns $.01 per kit, and we’re helping to keep extra trash out of the landfills.  Collect them at home, and bring them to our First Friday “Stop, Drop and Recycle” events.
