Physical Education Program
Balboa Welcomes Coach Eddie
GETTING TO KNOW COACH EDDIE
One of the positions supported by the COMPASS Fund is our Physical Education teacher. This year, Balboa is thrilled to welcome North Valley
YMCA PLAY Program and Coach Eddie Flores to our school family. As practically every parent knows by now, Coach Eddie has made a great
impression on our students. We thought it would be nice for everyone to get to know Coach Eddie a little better
What is your background and training?
I began volunteering for the YMCA residence camp when I was 16. Every summer we went up to Big Bear and Mammoth for a week long sleep away camp. I volunteered as a counselor for a group of about ten kids. I like to think I was a role model hopefully setting an example of what to be and influencing them in making the right choices in order to be the best person they can be.
What made you decide to pursue a career in Physical Education?
Since I was a child I have always been athletic, I ran two marathons in middle school and won various awards in track and cross country in high school. I did have a setback which involved surgery and about four months of physical therapy. My therapist is really the reason I’m constantly running today and pushing myself. I knew I wanted to make that same impact on others.
What do you hope to impart to your students?
I hope to teach my students how to live a healthy life both physically and mentally. Teaching them basic skills such as catching and throwing, as well as technical skills having to do with basketball and football. The most important thing I emphasize in my class and to my students is to have fun. Although I make it competitive, I explain winning isn’t being the fastest or strongest, winning is trying YOUR best and enjoying it the entire time.
Why is Physical Education important for an elementary school curriculum?
I believe physical education is important to every elementary school curriculum because it is important to keep kids active even if it is just for a single day a week. It is important that children learn to stay active and live healthy at a young age while their brains are still absorbing everything so they can continue to practice these great habits as they grow.
If you were to see a student ten years from now, what one thing would you want them to remember about you and your class?
I would want that student to remember being super excited for PE and not being able to wait until they had the chance to be outside and play games. I would want them to remember me as being the coach that always made them look forward to doing exercise and learning a new skill every week.
Please help us keep Coach Eddie at Balboa Magnet by donating to the COMPASS Fund. Your contributions pay the salaries of our P.E. coach, and vocal music, Instructional Technology Support and science lab instructors.
We will be unable to continue funding this enrichment program without your help! Please contribute now in any amount to keep this amazing program going.
